There is plenty you should know as you begin to shop for a waterbed. Here is some help to get you started.

Style

  • First decide between a frame style and a soft-sided waterbed.
  • Frame style waterbeds are made of wood, generally pine, painted MDF or padded upholstery. There are numerous designs to choose from, simple or ornate, contemporary or traditional, to compliment your bedroom style and furniture.
  • A watermattress with a protective liner fits into the wooden frame. A temperature control system beneath the mattress and liner gives you the ability to regulate the bed to a comfortable sleeping temperature.
  • A soft-sided waterbed looks like an ordinary divan. A foam frame surrounds the watermattress, hence the name ‘soft-sided’. It is comfortable to sit on the edge of a soft-sided waterbed. Matching headboards are optional. You can use an existing headboard or put a surround frame around a soft-sided bed.

NB The measurements of soft-sided beds are overall sizes. There are many more standard sizes available in soft-sided beds.

Budget

  • Decide what your budget is. Waterbeds are very affordable and vary in price from under £500 to £2000+.

Other Considerations

  • Take time to try different types of waterbeds. You’ll give yourself the opportunity to find the perfect bed for you.
  • If you are shopping as couple, test the bed together. Lie on it in the positions you normally fall asleep in.
  • Investigate watermattress options. All water mattresses are the same superb quality. Layers of fibre inside the mattress affect the movement of the water, the more layers of fibre the less movement. The choice of stability is a personal preference. There are 6 or 7 different mattresses, from Free Flow to Ultra Stable.
  • You can choose either ONE mattress in the bed or a DUAL mattress option, where partners have their own mattress and heater.
  • Invest in the finest waterbed you can. As we spend up to a third of our lives in bed, it is an investment in our well being more than anything.
